How to Maintain and Care for Your Body Armor for Maximum Protection

At National Body Armor, we are committed to providing law enforcement, security professionals, first responders, and responsible citizens with protective solutions they can rely on. Your new armor is more than just equipment. It is an investment in your safety, confidence, and peace of mind.

Whether you wear armor every day on the job or keep it ready for emergency situations, proper care and maintenance will ensure it performs at its best when you need it most.

Why Body Armor is Essential

Body armor is one of the most important safety tools for police officers, first responders, and security personnel. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has recorded over 3,100 officer saves since the 1970s because they were wearing body armor. These incidents include firearm assaults, edged weapon attacks, and even motor vehicle accidents. Wearing armor is a proven life-saving decision.

How Long Does Body Armor Last

While all armor listed on the NIJ Compliant Products List (CPL) carries a ballistic performance warranty, the actual lifespan of armor depends on:

  • Storage and maintenance habits

  • Environmental exposure such as heat, humidity, and sunlight

  • Frequency and intensity of use

Reasons for replacement include:

  • Change in body weight or shape

  • New weapon or ammunition threats

  • Damage from a ballistic or edged weapon strike

  • General wear and tear

Inspection Guidelines

Soft Armor Panels

  • Inspect covers regularly for cuts, tears, loose stitching, or any damage that could allow moisture inside

  • Prevent rubbing or friction that can wear through the cover

Hard Armor Plates

  • Check before every use for cracks, dents, or visible damage

  • Replace immediately if damage is detected

Labels and Warranty Dates

  • Ensure the label is intact and readable. It contains the model, protection level, and warranty period

  • Replace armor that has expired or if the label is illegible

Important: Never open a ballistic panel or attempt repairs yourself. Contact National Body Armor for inspection or replacement options.

Break-In Period for Comfort

Our vests are designed to form to your body. For the first 2 to 4 weeks:

  • Wear your vest slightly tighter than normal to allow it to mold to your shape

  • After break-in, adjust straps for a secure but comfortable fit

Care and Handling

  • Avoid bending, folding, or compressing armor panels unnecessarily

  • Keep armor away from sharp objects and excessive handling that may damage fibers

Cleaning Instructions

  • Do not dry-clean, machine-wash, or machine-dry ballistic panels

  • Avoid detergents, solvents, and commercial cleaning services

  • Always follow label instructions for cleaning both armor panels and carriers

  • Carriers can usually be hand or machine-washed separately. Check the tag for details

Storage Tips

  • Store armor flat in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight

  • If hanging, use a heavy-duty hanger made for body armor

  • Never hang armor by the carrier straps

  • Fully air-dry armor before storing

  • Avoid sealed, low-airflow spaces or hot areas such as car trunks
